The study of the 化学 and chemical processes occurring in living things, bio化学 is a fascinating field of study with myriad applications. 生物化学 provides critical knowledge that forms the foundation for new developments in healthcare, 营养与健康, 药品, forensic processes and much more. Biochemists’ work is vital to our understanding of the inner workings of the body, and consequently to how we live and care for them.

B.S. in 生物化学 is a 120-hour degree program designed to give students a strong foundation in the chemical and biological sciences. 学生 can expect an exciting and challenging program with courses that span a broad array of studies, including organic and physical 化学, 研究方法, 细胞生物学, enzymology and molecular bio化学 among others. As part of their studies, students will have the opportunity to work with 高科技仪器 以及核磁共振设备.

生物化学 and 化学 majors are also encouraged to enrich their studies by participating in research under the direction of faculty as part of their courses, independently or via the Welch Summer Research Series.

They may also pursue advanced work as part of the Cardinal Chemistry Scholars, a National Science Foundation-funded scholarship program, which offers professional development and support for research endeavors.

Pre-Medicine Concentration

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in 生物化学 program has a Pre-Medicine (pre-med) concentration for students wanting to pursue medical school after graduating with their undergraduate degree. The courses in the pre-med program are aligned with the admissions criteria for all medical schools in Texas and a large number in other states. This concentration is designed to prepare students for the medical school admissions exam (MCAT) and equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed once in medical school.

The pre-med concentration under the B.S. in bio化学 program will give students a strong foundation in biology, 化学, physics and the social sciences. This specialized curriculum will ensure that students are prepared for the MCAT, provided with research opportunities and trained in communication and writing skills. In addition to academic skills, the program will help students master the core competencies necessary for success in medical school and beyond when they serve their communities as a physician.
